What is next?

newpet_01.pngNow that you have had you pup or kitten in for the preliminary vaccines and deworming, what comes next?

All dogs and cats not to be kept for breeding should be spayed (female) or neutered (male) to help reduce behavior problems such as running away, urinating in the house, jumping on people, aggression and to improve the health of the pet due to reproductive disorders, cancers of the prostate or mammary glands and traumas while out looking for a mate.  Microchip identification is highly recommended and most easily done at the surgery time.

Surgery should be booked a couple weeks in advance, no food for 12 hours before surgery.  Admissions for surgery are between 8 and 9 am when a pre-surgical exam will take place, blood taken in some cases and the surgery explained.  You can call in any time for an update on your pet.  We usually decide on  “go home” times around 2-3 in the afternoon and ask you to call in at that time.  All abdominal and declaw surgeries stay overnight in the hospital and are sent home with pain medication as they are more involved and painful procedures.  All surgeries over 15 min are put on intravenous fluids during the procedure.  We do complimentary toe nail trims on all surgery patients.  Pre anesthetic bloodwork is always recommended for baseline values to check organ function, signs of infection etc.  This can be waived by the owner if costs are a concern.

Our animal nurses will generally discharge the surgeries giving a Discharge sheet with written instructions so everyone in the household gets all the necessary  information.  Most surgeries have a follow up call a couple days later and a re check appointment 10-14 days later that is included in the surgery price.

Further vaccines are to be given at the annual exam and the appropriate vaccine can be determined at that time.  Heartworm medications are recommended if it is the season (mosquito season) and flea prevention during the summer. Adult pets should have deworming or a fecal check at least annually.  Ask our staff what you can do for home dental care for your dog or cat.
